Yesterday evening we took out some food leftovers from the kitchen and our little friend Oscar was hanging out with the chickens getting leftovers! He seems to currently be residing under our chicken coop. He didn’t seem to mind us at all coming up to the fence and dropping food. Opossums can be a nuisance, getting into trash or raiding a bird feeder, but here on our homestead, he is a welcomed little fellow. Opossums rarely have rabies, eat ticks, so our chances of Lyme Disease goes down, they eat grubs that can ruin gardens, and they can eat mice and other small rodents.
If he was hungry and desperate enough, sure, I could probably lose a chicken, but he’s set up his home here precisely because he can eat the leftover chicken food (we’ve seen him curled up in the food bowls), and he also comes up onto the porch to help himself to the cat food we put out each morning for the strays that hang out on our road.
